An electricity transformer weighing 197 tonnes will be transported from Glasgow to Renfrewshire with a police escort in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
The machinery is set to leave King George V Dock just after midnight and embark on a slow-moving five-and-a-half hour journey to Neilston sub-station in Gleniffer Road.
The equipment will follow a “carefully planned route” from the junction of A736 and Hurlet Road via Grahamston Road, Caplethill Road, Glenburn Road and on to the B775 before reaching its destination.
Councillors were informed of the planned “abnormal load movement” through the local authority in an update on Wednesday, April 19.
They were advised in an email: “SP Energy Networks own and maintain the electricity networks in central and southern Scotland.
“As the nation moves to clean energy and reducing overall emissions which benefits all of society the electricity network requires additional capacity to play its part in achieving net-zero targets.
“This ongoing modernisation includes the replacement of a transformer at Neilston Grid sub-station in Renfrewshire.
“In agreement with local councils, SP Energy Networks have arranged a transport operation for the movement of a 197-tonne transformer between King George V Docks in Glasgow and Neilston sub-station on Glennifer Road (B775) to the south of Glennifer Braes.”
The vehicle will be travelling “overnight” in a bid to minimise disruption on the roads.
The update added: “SP Energy Networks apologise for any inconvenience resulting from this activity and thank you for your ongoing support as we ensure this national infrastructure plays it part in delivering a more sustainable environment for us all.”
