The Electoral College voting process came to a close on Tuesday evening with Hawaii casting its four electoral votes for Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz. The final national totals mirrored the results from November's election, with President-elect Donald Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance each securing 312 votes, while Harris and Walz received 226 votes each.
As a reminder, a candidate needs to secure at least 270 out of the total 538 electoral votes to be elected president.
Notably, for the second consecutive election, there were no instances of 'faithless electors,' as each elector honored their commitment to vote for the candidates they were designated to represent.
Electors from all states and Washington, DC, participated in the voting process on Tuesday, marking a significant but largely symbolic step in the presidential election procedure.
Following the completion of the Electoral College voting, the next phase involves sending each state's electoral votes to Congress. Lawmakers are scheduled to convene in a joint session on January 6 to formally count and certify the electoral votes, officially declaring Trump and Vance as the next president and vice president.
The inauguration ceremony for the newly elected officials is set to take place at noon on January 20, 2025, marking the official commencement of their term in office.
