Elderly woman struck in 'serious' van collision 'dragged' from underneath by 20 people

An elderly woman had to be "dragged" by 20 people from underneath a van after a serious collision.

More than a dozen passersby rushed to scene to help woman in her 70s after she was struck by a Vauxhall Vivaro van yesterday afternoon.

She was airlifted to hospital from the scene on the A59 in Burscough, West Lancashire, and remains in a "stable but serious" condition.

An off-duty nurse who witnessed the collision told the Liverpool Echo: "A lady was stuck under the van and about 20 people lifted it off her and dragged her out.

"She was conscious and breathing throughout. I am an off duty nurse and my partner who helped was an off duty paramedic.

Lancashire Police urged motorist to avoid the area, closing the road.

They tweeted: "The emergency services are dealing with a serious road traffic collision on the A59 Liverpool Road, Burscough, close to Abbey Lane.

"A road closure has been put in place and we would ask motorists to avoid the area if possible."

It was confirmed that the road reopened at around 5pm yesterday and motorists were thanked for their patience and understanding.

Sgt David Hurst, of Lancashire Police’s Tactical Operations, said: “This collision has left a woman with some very serious injuries and my thoughts are with her and her loved ones at this time.

"We are working to establish the full circumstances of what led to the collision and I would ask anybody who could assist to contact police as soon as possible.”
