Elderly woman fighting for life after being hit by car in Prestwick Main Street

An elderly woman is fighting for her life after being hit by a car which mounted a pavement in Prestwick.

The vehicle hit several parked cars before colliding with the pedestrian and smashing into a shop window on Saturday lunchtime.

The 86-year-old victim was initially transferred to Crosshouse Hospital with police describing her injuries as "non-life threatening".

However, her condition has now deteriorated and she has been transferred to Glasgow's Queen Elizabeth Hospital where she is in a critical condition.

Police are now appealing for information following the road crash in Prestwick Main Street at around 12.40pm on Saturday.

The incident saw a vehicle hit several parked cars before mounting the pavement where it collided with the pedestrian and crashed into the front of the Savers health and beauty store.

The shop remains closed today due to the "unsafe structure" of the building.

Emergency services rushed to the scene and locked down the Main Street for around 45 minutes.

The 74-year-old male driver of the vehicle was uninjured but has been left badly shaken by the incident.

Sergeant Chris Hoggans, from Road Policing, said: “Main Street was pretty busy on Saturday afternoon and I am appealing to members of the public, who were in the area around the time of the incident, to contact us with any information.

"It’s vital we have all the facts so we can continue to piece together the full circumstances of what has happened.”

Anyone with information is asked to call Police Scotland, quoting incident number 1650 of 28 May, 2022.
