Police examine the four-wheel drive involved in the crash on The Grove Way at Salisbury East. (ABC News)

An elderly woman has died after being hit by a four-wheel drive in Adelaide's north last night.

Police say the vehicle struck the 81-year-old woman from Golden Grove about 10:30pm at Salisbury East.

She died at the scene.

The Grove Way was closed for several hours as Major Crash investigated but the road has since reopened.

Police said the driver remained at the scene and was helping with the investigation.

Thirty-four lives have been lost on South Australian roads this year, compared with 46 at the same time last year.
