Elderly woman confirmed as victim of 'accidental' flat fire

An elderly woman has been confirmed as the victim of an accidental ground floor flat fire in Kirkdale.

Emergency services were called to Carisbrooke Road in Kirkdale shortly before 4pm yesterday, March 12, after reports of a flat fire.

Fire crews from three engines attended the incident and entered the ground floor property - but sadly a body of was found inside.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service has now told the ECHO that an investigation has taken place and confirmed the fire was "accidental" and there were "no suspicious circumstances".

The spokesperson said: "I can confirm that a joint investigation by Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service and Merseyside Police into the fire on Carisbrooke Road, Kirkdale has taken place and was completed today.

"The investigation found the cause of the fire to be accidental, there are no suspicious circumstances.

"Sadly, the fire resulted in the tragic death of an elderly woman."

Emergency services were called at 3.48pm on March 12 and arrived three minutes later.

Four firefighters entered the property to fight the "serious" fire and search the property for occupants - but found found a body inside.

Yesterday a spokesperson said: "Sadly, during their search firefighters discovered the body of a deceased casualty."

Images taken by the ECHO yesterday showed police cordoned off a large part of the road while fire crews are at the scene.

Forensic officers could also be seen working at the scene of the fire and taking images inside the cordon.

Today new images showed the road is back open while a single police scientific support van remained outside the property.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "We can confirm emergency services attended a report of a fatal fire in Kirkdale yesterday afternoon (Saturday 12 March).

"Emergency services were called to a report of a fire at a flat on Carisbrooke Road at around 3.55pm.

"Firefighters discovered a body at the property after being called to a report of a fire contained within the flat. The deceased has not yet been formally identified.

"The Fire Service (MFRS) is investigating the cause of the fire. At this time, it is not being treated as suspicious."
