According to reports from affiliate KCAL, the decision to evacuate was made as flames approached just a block away from the facility. Video footage captured the urgency of the situation, showing dozens of residents in wheelchairs, many of whom were only dressed in thin gowns and shawls to shield themselves from the cold night.
In the rush to evacuate, some residents were without proper footwear, wearing only socks as they were guided to safety. Workers at the scene worked tirelessly to assist the elderly, providing care and protection from the elements.
One worker, identified as Randy, mentioned that the evacuation efforts aimed to relocate approximately 95 individuals from the center. The sound of ambulances and police cars filled the air, underscoring the gravity of the situation as some residents had to be transported on gurneys.
