Elderly man 'seriously injured' in Wexford dog attack

A Garda investigation remains underway after a man in his 70s suffered serious injuries after being attacked by a dog in Co Wexford earlier this week.

The vicious incident occurred in Enniscorthy at around 5pm on Monday afternoon, when emergency services were called to the scene of a dog attack that left a man requiring urgent medical treatment.

The man was rushed to Wexford General Hospital, though his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

The dog involved in the incident has since been put down, Gardai have confirmed.

A Garda spokesperson confirmed to The Irish Mirror: "Gardaí are investigating an incident where a male in his 70 was seriously injured by a dog in Enniscorthy, Co Wexford at approximately 5:00pm on Monday 13th February 2023.

"The man was taken to Wexford General Hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries. The dog has now been destroyed.

"Investigations are ongoing."

Monday's incident is the latest in a series of dog attacks in Ireland recently which have led to calls from senior Government figures for an overhaul to Ireland's current dog laws.

Last month, the Oireachtas Agriculture Committee heard from canine behaviour expert Nanci Creedon that prospective dog owners should be required to complete a test not dissimilar to a driving theory test in order to qualify for ownership of dogs.

Ms Creedon said: "Education should be implemented in a variety of ways.

"In my opinion, the most effective method of owner education will be to legislate for it to be mandatory to pass a theory test that must be passed prior to obtaining a dog licence.

"As we've learned a dog of any breed in any size can cause a fatality, similarly to how a car of any size can cause a fatality."
