An 80-year-old man charged with sexually assaulting an 87-year-old woman in a Sydney aged care home has been released on bail.
William John Newbold was arrested on Friday and initially refused bail.
New South Wales police said in a statement they were told “a man, who is known to visit the facility, had allegedly entered the woman’s room on two occasions before sexually assaulting her”.
Police arrested Newbold and charged him with “aggravated sex assault – victim with cognitive impairment, aggravated – sexually touch another person and fail to comply with direction storage of firearm”, the statement said.
Paramedics treated the woman and took her to Royal North Shore hospital, but she “did not suffer any serious physical injuries”.
Newbold was granted bail on Sunday after appearing in the Parramatta court by video link. His bail conditions include reporting to police each week and not going within 500 metres of the aged care home.
Newbold will face a committal hearing on 14 March.
