Police are searching for the driver of a 4WD involved in a fatal crash near Perth that killed an elderly man riding an electric bike.

Police say the 86-year-old man was hit while riding a black electric bicycle on the Mitchell Freeway just before 5am on Sunday.

They believe an unknown vehicle, believed to be a silver Mitsubishi four-wheel drive, struck the man near the Hepburn Avenue exit.

It did not stop, and the man died at the scene from critical injuries.

Police say the car involved would have significant front end damage, particularly on the left-hand passenger side.
