Elden Ring Spirit Calling Bell – how to summon phantoms

One of the best additions to the Dark Souls formula in Elden Ring is the phantom summons. Instead of waiting around to call another player in to help with a boss, you can call in a range of animals, beasts, and NPCs.

You may well come across some summons before you even have the means to call on them, however. That’s because you need to get hold of the Spirit Calling Bell first. Here’s how to get it.

First, you need to unlock Torrent, your spectral steed. This should happen naturally as you progress through the game.

Once you have Torrent, head to the Church of Elleh, which is slightly north of the First Step, the place where you first stepped out into the open world.

When you arrive, you’ll see an NPC sitting on the wall: Renna, the witch. She asks you if you are Torrent’s owner. You need to answer with, “I can call the spectral steed”. Answer correctly and she’ll hand you the Spirit Calling Bell along with the Lone Wolf Ashes

Lone Wolf Ashes grant you the ability to call in three phantom wolves to aid you in battle. They’re perfect for distracting enemies and causing chip damage while you unleash a flurry of strikes.

Later, you’ll be able to make your summons even stronger by upgrading them with Grave Glovewort, which you can find growing down in catacombs.

It’s easy to completely miss acquiring the Spirit Calling Bell since there’s little reason to return to the Church of Elleh grace site if you already bought everything you need from the vendor there. It’s a good job we’ve got your back, eh?
