Eight ways to conserve water as Irish Water warns of supplies under pressure

Irish Water has warned households nationwide to begin conserving water as supplies come under pressure.

The average levels of rain since the start of 2022 have been lower than in years past, and so the Irish Water is already tankering water to some customers.

A spokesperson for the company said they are concerned about the rising pressure on supplies in parts of the country.

Regional Operations Manager John O'Donoghue said they want to stress the importance of conserving water all year round but that it is particularly important in the drier summer months.

Despite the warmer weather, shortages are also caused by leaks, old pipes, increased demand, growing population, and poor infrastructure.

In an effort to reduce the amount of water each household is wasting, a new online Conservation Calculator has been created.

It allows water consumers to fully understand how they are using their water supply and how their wastage can be minimised.

The app asked questions to see whether homes have taps or toilets that are leaking if water is left running during teeth brushing if dishwashers and washing machines are filled to capacity before being turned on, and if how long each member of the household is taking showers.

Based on these answers the online tool suggests ways to save up to one thousand litres of water per week.

  • Among the tips for saving water from water.ie are:
  • Take short showers instead of baths
  • Use a rosehead watering can instead of a hose
  • Use a bucket and sponge to wash cars instead of power washers
  • Use a basin in your sink when washing fruit and veg and reuse that water in the garden
  • Mend any running taps or leaks
  • Turn the tap off in between rinsing your toothbrush
  • Only run your washing machine and dish washer when they are full
  • Keep a jug of water in the fridge instead of running the tap
