An American bulldog that weighed almost eight stone was put down after it ran riot in a playground and attacked its owner. The huge dog bit its owner and sparked the evacuation of a park in a quiet North Yorkshire village, police said.
Armed police swooped on the playing fields in Thorpe Willoughby, near Selby, at around 10.30am on Tuesday after being called to reports of an out of control dog. The children’s playground and the playing fields were evacuated and officers could be seen in the car park.
Police called for help from veterinary practices, the RSPCA, local zoos and wildlife sanctuaries to get the dog under control.
It was eventually contained in a high fenced area before it was sedated by a vet and moved to kennels.
But police said it was later put down by vets following the worrying attack.
A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police said: " No-one, other than the owner of the dog, was injured during the incident. Their injuries are described as bite marks."
