Eight Glasgow film locations used in major Hollywood blockbusters and how to find them

In recent times, Glasgow has been a hit location with Hollywood movie producers for filming, partly due to the city's grid street layout and at times gothic like architecture.

From Batman to the newly released film Tetris, the city has been home to Hollywood actors and film crews for sometime now.

Locations in and around the surrounding areas of Glasgow have been used, from Govan Dock Yards to George Square and all angles of the city have had at least one camera team present over the past few years.

At Glasgow Live we collated a list of some of the locations you can see Scotland's biggest city, on the big screen.

Batman

First on our list is Batman which was released in 2022. Film teams alongside massive Hollywood A-listers where seen at Glasgow Cathedral and Necropolis Cemetery.

The Hollywood stars seen by Glasgow residents included the likes of teenage heart throb Robert Pattinson who played the new adaptation of Batman alongside his sidekick in the movie, Zoe Kravitz.

In the movie, Glasgow Cathedral plays a pivotal role in the story line with Necropolis playing host to the ending of the movie with Batman making his escape.

Indiana Jones

Next on the list is a movie that has not even been seen in the cinema, yet. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is due to be released to the big screen on June 30.

During filming in Glasgow, Harrison Ford was seen on St Vincent Street which was transformed and prepared for an American style parade that stretched along the street.

The shooting finished up in the summer of 2021. Residents of Glasgow are still enthusiastically waiting to see everyone's favourite historical archaeologist appear in their closest cinema house.

Tetris

Tetris, is a movie about a failing gaming programmer who brings one of the most famous video games from the USSR to the rest of the world. It has just been released on Apple TV.

The movie was filmed on Morrison Street with many surrounding areas of Glasgow used to depict the Soviet Union with actors such as Taron Egerton seen close to the River Clyde.

Other locations in and around Glasgow include: The Anderton Building, Prestwick Airport and even the South Lanarkshire Council Building, in Hamilton.

Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga

We are halfway down our list of Glasgow film locations and this one might be a bit controversial for some Glaswegians reading this as most of it was actually filmed in Edinburgh.

Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga, featuring, Will Ferrell is a fictitious story about two Icelanders making it to grand final of the ever so famous singing competition.

Many of the scenes were shot in Edinburgh with many streets in the city closed off for many weeks. But when the singing duet were on their way to the Hydro, where the final of the contest is supposedly to be held, the movie shows the venue in Edinburgh which angered many Glaswegians as the entertainment spot is actually located in Glasgow.

However, the scenes where you can see Will Ferrell and the rest of the performer sing, in the final is actually shot in the Hydro.

1917

Moving into the second half of our list, Govan Dock Yards which used to be home of Scotland's ship building industry was the location of the movie, 1917.

1917 is a film about the struggles of the German military at the conclusion of World War I and is full of Britain's elite actors including: Benedict Cumberbatch, Richard Madden, Colin Firth, Daniel Mays, Andrew Scott and many more.

During the movie the dockyards can be seen when the main character, played by George McKay is making his way to inform the front line of the British Army to with hold their immediate charge on the Germans as it is a trap.

Churchill

Another World War movie which was filmed in Glasgow was Churchill, voted the most popular Prime Ministers ever, the former PM was played by Gary Oldman.

The movie is set in 1939 and revolves the true story about the imminent threat of the Nazi invasion of France of the rest of Europe. Churchill has to convince his cabinet including some of his fiercest rivals to not surrender to the regime and stand up to the tyranny that faced many countries.

Glasgow City Chambers can be seen alongside some scenes shot at George Square.

World War Z

Another well known movie that was filmed at George square was the zombie apocalypse movie, World War Z.

At the peak of their fame, Brad and Angelina arrived in August 2011 for World War Z (Daily Record)

Featuring, Brad Pitt, the movie was tipped to be one of the movies of the year but was heavily criticised at the box office by critics.

However, the scenes of the initial break out, shot in the city centre shows Glasgow as the city that we all know and love, which is complete and utter chaos. As they say 'People Make Glasgow.'

Fast and Furious 9

Last on our extensive list is a movie that car fanatics will be familiar with some scenes filmed in Edinburgh but with many filmed in the city centre of Glasgow.

Fast and Furious 9 is the ninth instalment of the car racing series which features ,Vin Diesel along with many fast and rather loud cars which many Glaswegians were not happy about.

The film was shot in the streets just off of Glasgow Central Station with roads closed of for many days such as Broomview Law, Cadogan Street and Wellington Street. The city was seen only seen for 60 seconds with most of the footage in the final cut of the movie featuring Edinburgh.
