Eight Edinburgh drivers fined for driving wrong way down one-way street in Leith

Eight Edinburgh drivers have been fined for driving wrong way down one-way street in Leith.

Community police officers headed out to Mitchell Street and Maritime Lane after receiving complaints from residents about motorists ignoring the one way road signs.

The initiative took place on June 1 and resulted in eight drivers being fined and several receiving points on their license.

Edinburgh Police wrote on Twitter: "After receiving complaints from local residents North Edinburgh Community Police Team carried out a Road Traffic initiative in the Mitchell Street and Maritime Lane area of Leith.

"Eight vehicles were observed to drive through the no entry signs resulting in drivers being issued with three points and £100 fine."

A one-way street only allows vehicles to move in one direction down the road.

'No-entry' signs are used to prevent vehicles travelling the wrong way along the road, and sometimes road junctions are redesigned to make it difficult to turn against the flow of traffic.

Both failing to comply with a traffic sign and careless driving carry £100 on-the-spot fines and three penalty points.

Ignoring a traffic sign could even see you fined up to £1,000 if you contest the charge and it goes to court.

There is a strict maximum £2,500 fine and three points for reversing on a motorway or main carriageway, and the law for residential streets is left up to the interpretation of local police.
