Eight green sea turtles were recently released back into the Atlantic Ocean after being rehabilitated following a rare snowfall in northern Florida that left them suffering from cold stunning. The turtles were among 17 found stranded along Florida's northeastern Atlantic Coast and brought to the Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Juno Beach for treatment.
Lead veterinarian Dr. Heather Barron explained that the cold stunning event severely impacted many turtles due to the suppression of their immune systems caused by the frigid temperatures. The reptiles' body temperature is influenced by the surrounding water temperature, making them vulnerable to such extreme weather conditions.
The arctic blast that led to snowfall in northern Florida extended to South Florida, affecting numerous sea turtles. In addition to the initial group of 17 turtles, more than a dozen others have since been brought to the Loggerhead Marinelife Center for rehabilitation, with other facilities in the state also reaching capacity.

Veterinarians have been providing treatment to the turtles, including antibiotics, fluids, and intravenous nutrition to help them recover from cold stunning. This condition causes the turtles to lose mobility and become lethargic, requiring specialized care to ensure their well-being.
Most of the turtles are expected to be released back into the ocean in the coming weeks once they have fully recovered. The Loggerhead Marinelife Center is playing a crucial role in the rehabilitation process, with a focus on promoting ocean conservation and educating the public about marine life.
As part of their conservation efforts, the center will be hosting the 20th Annual TurtleFest, expecting to welcome over 15,000 visitors. This free event aims to raise awareness about ocean conservation through interactive exhibits and educational activities centered around marine life.
