Eight cars 'torched' in night of terror as Scots neighbours wake to explosions

Police have launched a probe after eight cars were "torched" in a night of terror in Glasgow.

The vehicles were targeted on several streets in Penilee and Hillington between around 4am and 5am on Thursday, January 26. It's understood cars were set on fire on Clavens Road, Tweedsmuir Road, Penneld Road and Craigmuir Road - as well as other addresses nearby - as terrified residents woke to sounds of explosions.

Pictures taken from the scene on Thursday morning showed the burnt out shell of a number of cars in the area. The insides of all the vehicles could be seen to have been mangled by the fire.

Panicked residents said they woke up terrified as the drama unfolded. Speaking to the Record, one local mum who asked not to be named said: "It was total chaos. It all started at around 4 or 5am. I woke up and heard an explosion before running outside with my phone to take a video.

"Police later came to me looking for the footage, but all you just see is the explosion lighting up the houses. They said CID will be back today.

"It seemed to be like some sort of rampage. I'm not sure the total amount of cars damaged but police told me at 5am that eight cars went up in a short space time. It's terrible - so dangerous."

Another neighbour said: "Two cars were on fire in Clavens Road. Thank God the fire brigade got there before anything else was damaged or anyone was injured. What a drama to wake up to. It was really frightening."

Officers confirmed they have launched an investigation and they are appealing for information. Police confirmed to the Record they are treating the fires as wilful.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 4.30am on Thursday, January 26, officers were called to a report of eight vehicles set on fire at separate addresses in the Penilee area.

“Officers are carrying out enquiries in the area and would appeal to anyone who has any information regarding these incidents to contact Govan Police Office through 101 with reference 0382 of January 26. Alternatively Crimestoppers can be contacted on 0800 555 111, where anonymity can be maintained.”

The Scottish Fire and Rescue service confirmed to the Record they were called to Clavens Road, Tweedsmuir Road, Penneld Road and Craigmuir Road to the reports of five cars on fire between 4.22am and 5.05am on Thursday. Crews left the scene after ensuring the area was made safe.
