Eid 2019: How long is Eid al-Adha and when does it end?

Muslims around the world are celebrating the second major Islamic festival of the year, Eid al-Adha.

Also known as the "Festival of the Sacrifice" , Eid al-Adha commemorates the story of the prophet Ibrahim.

Allah tested Ibrahim's devotion by ordering him to sacrifice his eldest son, but at the last minute - when he saw that Ibrahim was going to go through with it - he swapped his son for a lamb, sparing his life.

Muslims commemorate this story every year during the 12th month of the Islamic calendar, Dhu al-Hijjah.

There are special Eid al-Adha prayers, Muslims wear their best clothes and there are feasts and gifts given.

In some countries, it is traditional for an animal to be sacrificed, and for the meat to be split into three shares: one to be donated to those in need, one to be shared with family and relatives, and one to be enjoyed at home.

When does Eid al-Adha end?

In 2019 Eid al-Adha ends in the evening on Thursday 15 August.

The celebrations, which started on Sunday 11 August, last for four days.

In some countries, including Indonesia, Malaysia and the UAE, the first day of Eid al-Adha is a public holiday.

When is Eid al-Adha 2020?

Next year, Eid al-Adha will begin on Thursday 30 July and end on Monday 3 August.

Eid al-Fitr will take place on 23 and 24 May.

Eid Mubarak!
