Egyptian Screaming Woman mummy ‘died wailing in pain’ - Tech & Science Daily podcast

Listen here on your chosen podcast platform.

Scientists believe an ancient Egyptian mummy with a screaming facial expression may have died wailing in pain around 3,000 years ago.

The mummy is called “Screaming Woman” but her eternal expression of agony has puzzled experts for 90 years.

Using new technology to analyse the remains, archaeologists now believe she died crying in distress and her muscles quickly stiffened and froze shortly after her death, immortalising her anguish.

However, they said the cause of her death, which may have been violent, remains a mystery.

Funds worth £1.3billion that were due to be spent on technology and AI projects in the UK have been scrapped by the new Labour government, because the cash was ‘unfunded’ by the previous government.

It included £800 million for the creation of an exascale supercomputer at the University of Edinburgh and £500 million of additional funding for the AI Research Resource, a scheme which helps fund computing power for AI.

The Government said it was pulling together its own plans to invest in the right computer infrastructure as part of its AI Opportunities Action Plan.

There is investment coming into the UK though; speaking on our sister podcast How to be a CEO, Salesforce UK & Ireland CEO Zahra Bahrololoumi told us they’re setting up an AI centre in London, to boost people’s digital skills.

Sir Keir Starmer has warned that social media “carries responsibility” over tackling misinformation.

He made the statement in the wake of violent protests around the country following the stabbings in Southport.

The PM suggested he wanted to “work together” with social media firms to keep the country safe, and “get the relevant people around the table” to fix the problems.

Earlier this week, Merseyside Police issued a warning over the spreading online of an “incorrect” name for the Southport attacker – now named as 17-year-old Axel Rudakubana – and a false story around his background.

It’s rumoured Google could reveal four new smartphones during its event on the 13th August.

According to the rumours, they could include the standard Pixel 9, as well as the Pixel 9 Pro, a larger Pro XL device and a foldable Pro Fold model.

It has been less than twelve months since the tech giant released its Pixel 8 series devices, but the key features expected from these new smartphones include bigger screens, better cameras, and a lot more RAM to power its Gemini AI software.

It’s thought the AI tools will include a potential photo-editing powerhouse called ‘Studio’ and a feature called ‘Pixel Screenshots’ which reportedly allows users to search through their screenshots using AI, similar to how Microsoft’s Recall feature works with documents.
