An actress facing trial on public obscenity charges in Egypt for wearing a dress revealing her legs says she did not mean to offend anyone.

If found guilty, Rania Youssef could face five years in prison.

Ms Youssef claimed she had been influenced by fashion experts, in a statement on her Facebook page.

The actress was pictured wearing the dress for the closing ceremony of a film festival in Cairo.

Images of her at the event were widely shared on social media, prompting a group of lawyers to file a complaint that was taken up by the chief prosecutor.

She said: “I hope everyone can understand that I had good intentions and did not wish to anger anyone.”

The trial will take place next year.

It is the latest instance of ostensibly secular authorities siding with religious conservatives in Muslim majority Egypt, where the military overthrew an elected Islamist president in 2013.

In 2012, an Egyptian novelist was convicted on a charge of obscenity for referencing sex and drugs in his book.

He was sentenced to two years in prison, sparking outrage amongst human rights activists.

His sentence was suspended following an appeal to a Cairo court.
