Egypt strongly condemned on Monday the desecration of the holy Quran by extremists in Sweden.
Its Foreign Ministry expressed its rejection of violations against religious beliefs and values.
It said it rejects provocative practices that go against human values.
It called for tolerance and peaceful coexistence between people, shunning of incitement and hatred and an end to acts of violence and incitement that could destabilize societies.
Al-Azhar expressed its strong condemnation of the burning of the Quran in Sweden.
In a statement, it said encroaching on religious sanctities is not a matter of freedom of expression.
It urged for the need to protect the rights of Muslims to practice their religion in societies where they live.
