EFL to introduce five substitute rule as Sunderland prepare for return to the Championship

Sunderland will be allowed to make five substitutions per game next season after the EFL announced it will introduce the rule throughout the football league.

The rules were changed temporarily during the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic but the EFL and Premier League reverted to three subs last season.

The majority of European leagues kept the rule in place and now the Premier League and EFL have both re-adopted the sub rule.

There will still be seven available substitutes, with five allowed to come on within three separate intervals, but the option to replace five first-teamers should help Sunderland during a busy and difficult season in the Championship.

Clubs also voted for the introduction of a Club Financial Reporting Panel (CFRP) and Club Financial Reporting Unit (CFRU), who will oversee Financial Fair play regulations and reports to HMRC, according the Athletic .

And there will also be changed to flexibility regarding kits and kit clashes, giving home sides in the EFL the choice to wear change colours 'where a clash may occur that would make it difficult for people who are colour blind to differentiate between the kits worn by both teams.’

The club will learn of their fixtures upon return to the Championship on Thursday, June 23 at 9 AM, with the season due to kick off on the final weekend of July (30-31).
