EFL pundit raises question marks over Sunderland's second season syndrome

EFL pundit Sam Parkin believes it would be incredibly harsh if Sunderland were to part company with Tony Mowbray. Rumours online suggested the Wearsiders were lining up a number of candidates to replace their current head coach, despite finishing in the Championship play-offs.

Mowbray took over from Alex Neil back just a month into the season when the promotion winning boss left the Stadium of Light for Stoke City. The Black Cats came through an injury crisis to snatch a play-off berth on the final day of the season and will be looking to build on that come next season.

However, Parking believes the loss of Manchester United loanee Amad Diallo means a top-six finish is unlikely again next season, despite the impending return of Ross Stewart.

Parkin told the What the EFL?! Podcast: "Sunderland, obviously everyone’s had their say on the speculation about Tony Mowbray, that would be incredibly harsh given what he’s had to work with this year and the results that he’s been able to produce.

"They’ll obviously have Ross Stewart back and a number of those injured lads will come back into the picture, so things are looking relatively rosy, although Diallo will probably have to be replaced.

"So I’m not sure they’ll be able to match what they did this year."
