EE mobile phone warning as customers to be hit with extra charges from today

Mobile company EE will start charging a new flat £2 roaming fee from day.

The charge will be applied to your monthly bill if you use your monthly allowance throughout Europe from March 3, 2022.

While the UK was part of the EU, mobile firms were banned from charging extra roaming fees when customers used their UK allowance of minutes, tests and data throughout European countries.

However, now that the post- Brexit transition is over, the rules no longer apply.

Back in May last year, EE became one of the first firms to reveal the reintroduction of charges, according to Money Saving Expert.

Despite the move, ten of the biggest providers apparently have no plans to charge customers the additional fees.

EE's roaming charge was originally due to come into force on the January, 6 2022 but the mobile firm has pushed back the introduction to today.

The charges will not apply to customers currently with EE and will be applied when a contract renewed or a new customer takes on an EE contract.

Alternatively, EE customers with an Essential plan can also choose to take out a 30-day 'Roam Abroad Pass' for £10, which will be cheaper than the new £2/day fee if the allowance is used throughout the EU for more than five days.

BT and Plusnet mobile customers, which are part of the same group as EE, are not affected and will be able to continue to roam in Europe for free.

Here's how the charges will work

  • One low fixed daily payment of £2 per day.
  • You don't need to do anything to opt in: if you use your allowances you'll pay £2 for that day, and if you don't, you won't be charged anything.

  • All your allowances work just like at home - and you can buy more data if you need to.

  • The £2 per day charge for using your phone in our European roaming zone will begin from your March 2022 bill cycle date.
