EE introduces roaming fees: Which countries do you now need to pay?

As EE imposed roaming costs for using data abroad this week, millions of customers will now be subject to extra charges.

Anyone with an EE pay-as-you-go subscription and those who manually top up their phone credit are subject to the charges.

The action was taken after EE charged pay monthly subscribers £2 per day to use their phone, text, and internet allowances when travelling to Europe in March last year.

Prior to Brexit, mobile networks were prohibited from charging users extra costs for using their UK allotment for calls, texts, and data while travelling throughout Europe. However, since European Union regulations are no longer relevant, this provision has been abolished.

The new charges will even affect customers in the Channel Islands.

What’s changing with EE?

Customers of EE’s pay-as-you-go service who go to 47 locations across Europe will now have to pay to make calls, send messages, and use mobile data due to the change.

Calls cost 70p per minute, texts cost 30p, and 550MB of mobile data costs £3.

By purchasing the ‘Roam like Home’ add-on, which costs £2.50 for 24 hours or £10 for seven days, customers may be able to save money.

This enables you to pay in advance for a set number of calls, texts, and mobile data over a predetermined time period, but the amount of money you save will depend on how frequently you use your phone while travelling.

Where do you now need to pay?

You will now need to pay extra in most Europe destinations, in the Channel Islands, and in some other countries in popular locations like the Caribbean, and French territories in the Indian Ocean. The 47 destinations where EE customers will be charged roaming fees are:

  • Austria
  • The Azores
