Manchester United legend Edwin van der Sar is in intensive care after suffering a brain haemorrhage on holiday in Croatia.
It has been reported that the 52-year-old had to be taken to hospital by helicopter following bleeding around his brain.
The Dutchman spent a decade in the Premier League, firstly with Fulham for four years before spending six seasons with Man United, where he won the Champions League.
A statement from his former club Ajax reads: "On Friday, Edwin van der Sar has had a bleeding around his brain. He’s currently in hospital in the intensive care unit and is in a stable condition.
"Once there is more concrete information, an update will follow. Everyone at Ajax wishes Edwin a speedy recovery. We’re thinking of you."
Van der Sar started his career off at the Amsterdam side, making more than 300 appearances during his nine-year stint in the Dutch capital. And after a playing career than also included a spell at Juventus ended, he returned to Ajax, first as a marketing director before being promoted to the role of CEO in 2016.
However, he stepped down from the role at the end of the season after Ajax's third-placed finish. In a statement published in May, Van der Sar said: "After almost 11 years on the board, I am done. We have experienced wonderful things together, but it has also been an incredibly tough period.
"I am very grateful for the people I have met and worked with during my second career at Ajax, and what we have achieved and been through together.
"I feel the need to take some distance, to get some rest, and to do other things. It doesn't feel good to take decisions about the future of this wonderful club in the coming period. That is why I have decided to resign."
Van der Sar also won the Champions League with Ajax and was capped 130 times by the Netherlands during his playing career.
