Educating Yorkshire's stammerer Mushy 'in hiding' as family desperate to find him girlfriend

It's been almost a decade ago, Musharaf Asghar since captured our hearts when he overcame his stammer with the help of his English teacher, Mr Burton, on Channel 4 's Educating Yorkshire.

The moving scenes, aired in 2013, showed Musharaf struggling to speak before Mr Burton suggested using a technique he saw while watching The King's Speech which helped get the teenager to read a poem out loud - bringing viewers to tears.

Nine years on, Musharaf - known as Mushy - is now 25 and has recently graduated from the University of Huddersfield with a degree in Broadcast Journalism.

He's now working as a keynote speaker and as a journalist around the Kirklees area where Educating Yorkshire was filmed and where he still lives.

But as his family keep reminding him, there's one thing he's missing - a girlfriend.

Speaking to The Mirror, Musharaf joked he's been "in hiding" from his loved ones since finishing his uni degree, as he had been using his studies as an excuse to not think about settling down.

He said: “Being brown and Asian, I think we’ve got this sort of checklist which isn’t really ours but is our parents’. The first thing is to go to uni and get some type of education.

"That [settling down] is the final draw at the moment. I’m currently in hiding because it seems as if every auntie and uncle is trying to basically get me hitched.

"M y mum’s been getting a lot of calls because they've found out I’ve graduated. I was using uni as an excuse, so I’m hiding away now. Hopefully, I can lay low for a few years.”

Mushy isn't too worried about finding love though, as he's still riding the high of having graduated from university - something he never thought he'd be able to do.

“I actually never thought I would get into uni. Even the thought of going to uni in the first place was something I'd never really thought about", he added, "it just shows that if you really put your mind to it, you really can achieve anything.”

The TV star also said he was worried he wouldn't "fit in" when he started university, but his fears were soon quashed and he now insists he had an "amazing time" during his studies.

And although he takes pride in himself for having graduated, he's still incredibly humble - and is quick to praise all of his secondary school teachers for the support they gave him over the years.

He said: “Without the support that I got from every teacher it would have been extremely difficult trying to contemplate how I would overcome or how I would actually try and talk.

"I think having that support that I did in school - having the people that helped me, having those teachers that just kept on pushing me to overcome the sort of comfort zone that I had was huge.

"I wouldn't be where I am [without my teachers]. Teachers can honestly change a young person's life in ways that they never ever thought they possibly could.”

The whole nation watched Mushy's journey on Educating Yorkshire, so it's hardly surprising that when he got to university and met new people, they immediately knew who he was - especially when he was used as a case study in one of his lectures.

He recalled: “I had this one module and it was actually based on Educating Yorkshire, which was quite insane.

“One of my lecturers at uni mentioned quite a few documentaries that he enjoyed watching, and I was sitting at the back, and he was talking about how this kid overcame his stammer by wearing headphones on this TV show.

“I was literally right at the back, and everyone turned to look at me. It was a very surreal moment.”

If he's being honest though, there's just one regret Musharaf has when it comes to the show that started it all.

"I am quite upset with the clip", he jokes, "I say that not in a bad way, but it makes me upset that if only I had a haircut! It was something I never thought about as a kid, but as amazing as the clip is, I just wish I had had a haircut.”
