Arsenal could use the sale of Eddie Nketiah to ensure they can solve the emerging striker crisis at the club without too much of a hassle.
According to the Telegraph, talks between Newcastle and Nketiah are progressing quickly, with the Gunners striker likely to complete a January move.
Both Arsenal and the Magpies have been linked to Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin who will be available for a transfer the Telegraph has claimed.
However, Edu offloading Nketiah to Newcastle would give the Gunners the advantage in the race for Calvert-Lewin as Eddie Howe’s side would already be packed with strikers, with Arsenal being on the contrary.
The Magpies have already been busy in this transfer window having signed Chris Wood from Burnley on a £25m deal which already increased the attacking options.
With Wood, Callum Wilson and Nketiah, signing another striker could drop down in the priority list for the owners, which could give Arsenal a free run at Calvert-Lewin.
Edu must be wary of Newcastle, which has been proven with their signing of Bruno Guimaraes in the January transfer window, who had reportedly gained interest for Arsenal in the past.
Mikel Arteta’s side is in desperate need of a striker due to an ongoing shortage at the club with Alexandre Lacazette’s contract set to expire in less than months, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s future at the club in doubt due to his recent disciplinary issues.
And if Nketiah was to depart, then the Gunners would be left with Folarin Balogun as the only recognised striker, but even he has left the club on loan to join Middlesborough.
After losing out on Dusan Vlahovic, Calvert-Lewin should be one of the main focuses for Arsenal and the club must make sure they do not lose out on another transfer target.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin would be an excellent signing to fill the striker void, as he has the necessary height and aerial dominance alongside the Premier League experience. He has scored 43 Premier League goals so far in his career, with 18 coming from his head.
The north London side has used different options in the forward position this season, but none of them has a dominant presence in the air. A signing in the area could transform the attacking phase of play.
To prevent potentially losing out on him to Newcastle, Arsenal’s sale of Nketiah could a long way in stopping the Magpies from swooping in for Calvert-Lewin.
