Edouard Mendy wins FIFA Best men's goalkeeper of the year as Chelsea enjoy strong night

Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has been crowned the best goalkeeper of 2021 by FIFA.

The Senegalese stopper helped the Blues to winning the Champions League and UEFA Super Cup in his first season at Stamford Bridge.

Currently away representing his nation at the Africa Cup of Nations, Mendy is a crucial component of Thomas Tuchel 's side, having signed from Rennes for £22million.

The 29-year-old will be delighted with the award after controversially being snubbed for the Ballon d'Or shortlist, prompting debate over whether African football was respected enough in world football.

"It's something that motivates me and pushes me to work. Honestly, I am wondering," Mendy told Canal Plus .

"If I had played for France and had taken part in the [ European Championships ], would we have this debate and this reflection?"

At FIFA's virtual ceremony in Zurich - which Mendy did not speak at - he saw his manager, Thomas Tuchel, win the men's coaching award and Jorginho make the Team of the Year.

Meanwhile, fellow Blues boss Emma Hayes won the women's coach award, making it a clean sweep for the west Londoners on Monday evening.

Upon accepting the award, Tuchel said: "I enjoy the journey and I enjoy the club. At the moment, this is a good fit.

"The company on the journey is so, so good. I'm grateful to have such support around me and to feel so good in such a competitive club.

"We've lost a bit of ground to Manchester City in the league but in any other competitions, we still follow our goals.

"We try to be the best version of ourselves and compete on the highest level."

On claiming victory like Hayes, he added: "Yeah, unbelievable.

"Big congratulations to Emma and all her staff, and all the women teams.

"They're doing an amazing job, of course we're in a competitive club and I think she's as proud of me.

"I think we try to contribute as much as possible."

Mendy is a big fan of his manager, telling his club's website in August: "The idea of a group is something that the coach has directly established.

"It is something that got stronger with good results. We saw that when we gave great performances. Every time we gave great performances, they were great collective performances.

"So, that shows you that we have only succeeded as a team, and that forges closer bonds between us. On the pitch, we play for our brothers because we are a family, and we do things as a family."
