Edouard Mendy signs for Al-Ahli as Chelsea cash in on unwanted goalkeeper

Chelsea have sold goalkeeper Edouard Mendy to Al-Ahli in a deal worth £16million.

The latest of what has become an exodus of players leaving Stamford Bridge for Saudi Arabia has been confirmed after a long spell out the side for Senegal international Mendy.

Mauricio Pochettino is set to hand Kepa Arrizabalaga the No1 shirt next season after the Spaniard ousted Mendy midway through last season following a number of high-profile mistakes.

Mendy arrived at Chelsea in 2020 to take the gloves off Kepa, going on to match the record for clean sheets in a single Champions League season as he helped the Blues lift the trophy in his debut season.

Yet he has been allowed to move to the Al-Ahli ahead of their return to the Saudi Pro League, having won the second-tier title last year after a shock relegation.

Mendy, 31, follows fellow countryman Kalidou Koulibaly to the Gulf state after his £17m deal with Al-Hilal was announced on the weekend.

Chelsea had already lost N’Golo Kante to Al-Ittihad on a free transfer and Hakim Ziyech is set to join Al-Nassr for £8m.
