Edouard Mendy is out to remind Chelsea, his detractors and maybe even himself about his best level when Senegal meet England on Sunday.
The goalkeeper has overcome a costly error against the Netherlands to help his country reach the knockout stage with good displays against Qatar and Ecuador.
Mendy lost his place in the Chelsea team in the build-up to the World Cup before an injury to Kepa Arrizabalaga saw him recalled for the final four games before the mid-season break.
But new manager Graham Potter is refusing to confirm which of his goalkeepers is his No1, and Mendy is also in a contract stand-off with Chelsea.
The 30-year-old first sat down for contract talks with the new Chelsea owners over the summer. Then still first-choice at Stamford Bridge and having been named the best goalkeeper of 2021 by FIFA, he asked for a salary that reflected his status.
But Mendy was offered significantly less than the huge £190,000-a-week deal that Kepa is on and then walked away from negotiations.
Chelsea have not improved their offer, and several high-profile errors made by Mendy at the beginning of the season have discouraged them from renegotiating. There is little sign of contract talks restarting and Chelsea are looking for alternatives.
Mendy would happily stay at Stamford Bridge, but wants to feel important.
He enjoyed two brilliant seasons after joining the Blues for £22million in 2020, winning the Champions League, Club World Cup and helping Senegal win the Africa Cup of Nations.
His form suffered a dip and his performances for Chelsea were criticised, but Senegal manager Aliou Cisse has spoken about his “blind faith” in Mendy and, against England, he has a chance to remind people what he can do. He can also attract clubs who might be in the market for a new goalkeeper next summer.
Manchester United, Tottenham, Juventus and Atletico Madrid are among the big European clubs considering entering the market for a new keeper. A move for Mendy next summer is viable, given he will be in the final two years of his contract at Chelsea and his value is likely to be well below the going rate for comparable players.
In Senegalese and African football, Mendy is a superstar. On Sunday, he has an opportunity to remind a few people of his talent once again.
