Edouard Mendy contract stance clear as Todd Boehly launches Chelsea plan amid Thomas Tuchel vow

Edouard Mendy has handed Chelsea a major blow as Todd Boehly rolls out a fresh round of new contracts. Reece James has already penned as six-year extension at Stamford Bridge this week and Mason Mount looks set to follow suit amid ongoing talks.

According to the Evening Standard, Mount and Mendy are the Blues' next priorities. It's said that preliminary discussions have taken place between the club and the former, who has two-years remaining on his current deal in west London.

The report adds that Mount, who is happy at the club, is set to become one of Chelsea's highest earners alongside fellow Cobham graduate James, but he's yet to receive a formal offer. While talks to retain the midfielder look promising, the same can not be said about Mendy's future.

The Evening Standard state that the Senegal international has already turned down an initial offer from Chelsea. Mendy, whose deal expires in 2025, is said to be one of the club's lowest earners.

Whispers of a new deal for Mendy follows a string of unconvincing displays which have cast doubt over his plausibility as Thomas Tuchel's number one. In recent weeks, the 30-year-old has endured a shaky start to the new season, making a number of errors.

But, the Blues boss has defended the shot-stopper and insisted that Mendy is just in a rut of poor form. Speaking to football.london, Tuchel said: "I think at the moment he is a bit unlucky in what he is doing.

"In training, he is fantastic, and he is, in general, a very calm and self-reflective guy who is aware that he lacks a little bit of luck at the moment. Things do not go in his favour. If he has maybe a situation where his action isn't 100% clear, he gets punished for it massively.

"He is just in this moment, and it feels like it's not so much his fault. I have the feeling because he tries everything, he is very calm and focused. We will keep on supporting him."
