Edinson Cavani sends message to Manchester United fans after swearing incident vs Crystal Palace

Outgoing Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani has issued a message to the club's supporters after he was filmed swearing at fans as he boarded the team coach following Sunday's 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace.

Wilfried Zaha netted the only goal of the game to condemn United to a fourth defeat in their last six Premier League matches, meaning they ended the campaign with 12 league defeats to their name. However, it was not enough to see them drop into the Europa Conference League, with West Ham United's 3-1 defeat to Brighton meaning United finished sixth and secured a Europa League spot.

Nevertheless, it is a huge failure for the club following a big summer of spending almost 12 months ago. The likes of Raphael Varane, Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo were all brought to Old Trafford in big-money deals.

With frustrations running high within the United camp, it was clear that Cavani, who made his final appearance for the club on Sunday, was amongst those most disappointed with their latest setback. As he headed back towards the team coach for the journey back up north, the Uruguay international was spotted sticking his middle finger up in the direction of supporters.

After stepping onto the bus, he turned around and raised his middle finger once again. It was unclear if it was aimed at Palace or United fans, just as it was unclear what was said to him to spark the reaction.

Cavani has since taken to Instagram to address United's fans, but it is unclear if his message has any direct relevance to what happened when he was leaving Selhurst Park. Translated from Spanish, the striker is understood to have said: "I would have several things to tell you, but I just want you to know that I wish you all the best in what is to come."

The 35-year-old made a rare start against Palace, filling in for the injured Ronaldo. It was just his fifth start of 2022 and brought an end to a disappointing campaign for him on a personal note. He made 20 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring just two goals.
