Edinson Cavani explains why Cristiano Ronaldo should beat David de Gea to Man United Player of the Year award

Edinson Cavani believes Cristiano Ronaldo has just edged David de Gea as Manchester United's best player this season.

It was a disappointing campaign for United. United were expected to challenge for the Premier League title, but they recorded their lowest ever league points total instead and they're now set to play Europa League football next term.

Although the majority of the players at the club have grossly underperformed, Ronaldo and De Gea actually ended the season with enhanced reputations. Ronaldo, 37, finished the campaign as United's top goalscorer with 24 goals in 39 appearances and De Gea often won the Reds points with world-class saves. The Spaniard made the No.1 spot his own again after losing it last season.

While United's players have received heavy criticism this term, Ronaldo and De Gea have been largely exempt from that anger.

Cavani was asked to name the best player from the forgettable season and he explained to United's in-house media why Ronaldo should just edge it.

“I think that overall, this season, the team has been a little inconsistent throughout the entire campaign," Cavani said.

"I don’t think that we ever managed to find that… how would you put it... that consistency during the season, whether it be in the group as a whole, or also on an individual basis. Sometimes it was down to injuries.

"Other times it was down to the dips in form that we can go through as players. But I think it was an inconsistent season for us, very inconsistent, in every sense of the word I believe. But I think that the stand-out player for us this season, and someone who did show a little bit more consistency, playing well regularly and always being there for us, has been Cristiano [Ronaldo].

"I think that, apart from having a short period when he wasn’t getting on the scoresheet, which can happen when you are a striker, Cristiano was probably our one player who showed the most consistency.

"After him comes David [De Gea], as he has also been one of the most consistent performers in the squad, so together, they have been the most consistent and best players in the squad from our season this time around.”
