Edinburgh youth football team involved in mass brawl during Scottish Cup tie

A shocking mass brawl broke out between two youth teams that were facing off in a Scottish Cup tie at the weekend.

An Edinburgh Portobello team faced off with their counterparts from Bellshill in the cup tie at Greenfaulds High School in Cumbernauld on Saturday November 26.

Spectators captured images of players from both sides trading punches and kicks whilst shocked fans looked on in horror.

The referee was understood to be furiously blowing his whistle as he tried to calm tensions but players from both sides were unable to be separated as pandemonium unfolded.

Several punches were traded between the two sides and one player can be seen being kicked to the ground as his teammates try to rush to his aid.

Adults were eventually able to calm the situation and pull apart the players before any more violence erupted.

It is understood that investigations are now taking place at both clubs to discipline those involved and that the Scottish Youth Football Association (SYFA) was looking into the incident.

A spokesperson for Portobello AFC said: “As far as Portobello are concerned it’s now a matter for the relevant authorities to deal with and we will support them in any way we can.

“We do not condone the actions of certain players and will deal with this accordingly. As for our opposition it’s not for us to comment as it’s not appropriate at this time.”

A spokesperson for Bellshil AFC said: “Unfortunately at this stage we are unable to comment on the incident until all internal and external investigations are completed.”

Florence Witherow, the chief operating officer for the SYFA, said: “The SYFA is aware of incidents which occurred during this match.

“As the information is currently being investigated, we will not be commenting any further at this time.”
