Edinburgh woman with a walker seen struggling through traffic and tram works

An Edinburgh woman was seen walking on a busy road, with the ongoing roadworks at the Foot of the Walk in Leith causing confusion.

The pensioner, who uses a walker, was seen on Great Junction Street as cars whizzed past. A local who spotted her filmed the concerning footage, and sent it to Edinburgh Live .

The anonymous resident said they assumed the woman had become confused and thought the only way to get through was on the road. They told us: “She obviously got muddled up by the roadworks.

“It’s a confusing bit of the road and you’ve got to take a detour to get through, so it would be difficult for an elderly person.”

The City of Edinburgh Council have been approached for comment on the incident.

This comes just days after another elderly resident fell off the pavement at the same section of roadworks, and warned others of the ‘dangerous’ crossing. Louise Livingstone, 67, broke her wrist and was helped by members of the public.

In response to Louise’s fall, Councillor Scott Arthur, Transport and Environment Convener, said: “I’m sorry to hear about this lady’s injury and wish her a speedy recovery. As part of Trams to Newhaven the final road and pavement layout is now in place outside of the Foot of the Walk pub, which includes dropped kerbs and tactile paving to aid people with mobility issues to cross the road.

“Temporary traffic lights have been in operation at Duke Street and Great Junction Street since October 2022 and we’ve not received any reports of issues, however I would encourage this individual to get in touch with the project team or myself to express any concerns.”
