Edinburgh woman gutted as callous crooks steal bike ahead of big NC500 road trip

An Edinburgh woman has been left gutted after heartless thieves stole her motorbike from her Leith home forcing her to cancel her dream NC500 trip this summer.

Kat Smith, 23 originally from Inverness had her motorbike stolen by heartless thieves on Monday night and with no CCTV or witnesses she is is not expecting to get it back.

Despite the bike not having the battery on the motorcycle when it was nicked, it was dragged away from the parking spot Kat can see from her flat window.

The 23-year-old security guard woke up from a nap ahead of a long night-shift at 8pm on Monday when she realised the bike was gone. She turned the outside light on to double check then immediately called police who said there 'wasn't much they could do.'"

The avid adventurer often used her bike - named Albert - to travel around Scotland but has had to cancel her latest big adventure with the three-year-old bike this summer.

Speaking to Edinburgh Live she said: "It happened three days ago, sometime between 4:00pm and 8:30pm when I woke from my nap before my night-shift. I looked out the window and noticed it was gone.

"I called the police straight away, they had stolen the bike but left the chain and cover behind in the space where it was parked.

"The police can't do much as there is no CCTV or witnesses. It didn't even have the battery with it so they must have used a van or dragged it round the corner out of the car park.

"There are three buildings nearby I checked for CCTV, one didn't have the camera facing the right direction, the other is a school which doesn't have CCTV and I'm waiting to hear back from the third.

"I mostly used it for work but did a lot of wild camping and travelled to go solo swimming with it, I won't be able to get out as much now.

"I had a big trip planned this summer to go with the bike around the north coast of Scotland on the NC500 that I had to cancel a couple of times before due to lockdown.

"I'm 24 this year so can get my license for a bigger bike, it was supposed to be my last big adventure with my first bike but sadly I have to cancel it.

"I'm not in a position to replace the bike now. It only cost £750, a Japanese make. My mum lent me the money to buy. It was a good bike - a fixer upper. It's not worth anything to anyone else even for parts but I definitely put a lot of money into fixing it up."

The 23-year-old continued: "I don't have massive expectations to find it but I'd like to warn others in the area so hopefully it doesn't happen to anyone else."

Sadly Kat's dream trip has been cancelled and although she is not expecting to get her beloved bike back she just wants to make others aware of potential thieves around the Leith area.

Police Scotland has been contacted for comment. Anyone with information can contact officers on 101.
