Edinburgh weather: Met Office issues update as heavy rain set to batter capital

The Met Office has issued an update as Edinburgh residents should expect some miserable weather in the coming days.

After we enjoyed mild temperatures and a hot summer, the air is starting to feel chilly and showers and strong gusts of wind are forecasted.

From 3pm, showers are expected to hit East Lothian with fresh northwesterly winds, these remaining strong around the coasts. The maximum temperatures only reaching 13C.

Until Friday, it is expected to be dry but on September 30 the Met Office warns of wet, windy weather as heavy rain set to batter the city from 1pm with strong gusts of wind reaching 32 miles per hour. This will followed by brighter weather with blustery showers on Saturday.

The unsettled weather on Friday is brought by low pressure in the north of the UK.

Daniel Rudman, Deputy Chief Meteorologist explains: “On Friday it looks as though a deeper area of low pressure will move into the northwest of the UK. This means that many can expect a more notably wet and windy spell, for a time on Friday, than we’ve seen so far this autumn. However, this is nothing unusual for the time of year.”

Daniel added: “At this time of year, knock-on effects from the Atlantic tropical cyclone season can lower confidence when forecasting more than a few days ahead, and so the exact timings for rainfall and wind strengths for Friday may vary throughout the week. The best thing you can do if you’ve got outdoor plans is make sure you’re always using the most up to date forecast.”
