Edinburgh weather: Exact time thunderstorms set to batter city as flood alert issued

The weather is on the turn in Edinburgh after locals and visitors enjoyed a lengthy heatwave.

While the weekend was a mixed bag with sunshine and some showers, weather forecasters have predicted further rainfall for the week ahead.

To start off the week, the Met Office has forecasted that thunderstorms are expected on Monday afternoon.

Locals will wake up to sunny skies in the morning with temperatures reaching 12C by 7am and quickly reaching 15C by 9am. However by 1pm, while it will still feel mild at 18C, showers are expected to hit with skies turning grey.

From 3pm, the weather forecasters warn that residents should prepare for heavier showers and thunderstorms.

This comes as Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) has issued a flood alert for Monday for Edinburgh and the Lothians.

Met Office adds: "A bright day with some sunny spells, though clouds will build to bring a scattered of heavy showers, possibly with the odd rumble of thunder. Occasionally fresh westerly winds. Maximum temperature 20C.

"Isolated showers dying out early this evening with a generally sunny end to the evening. The night will be mainly dry and clear but rain reaching southwest by morning. Minimum temperature 9C."

Looking forward to Tuesday, showers are expected to be heavy throughout the day.
