Edinburgh weather: Exact time thunder set to hit capital on Sunday

Thunderstorms are forecast in Edinburgh on Sunday evening, following a grey and wet day.

According to the Met Office, it will be "cloudy" for much of the morning and afternoon. After this, "heavy showers" are expected in the early evening.

The forecaster states: "Some bright spells at times through the Lothians and Borders, but mostly cloudy with showers. The showers well scattered during the morning, but becoming heavy and more widespread in the afternoon, the odd rumble of thunder possible."

Sunday morning in the capital will warm but otherwise unremarkable, with temperatures of just under 20 degrees Celsius and grey skies. By lunchtime, things will have warmed up to 20C, where they will remain for most of the afternoon.

At around 6pm, temperatures will begin to gradually fall again, and "light showers" are expected. These will turn heavy a couple of hours later.

By 9pm, the mercury will have fallen to 18C and, according to the Met Office, "thunder" is forecast. It will likely be short-lived however, as by 10pm skies are expected to brighten up slightly.

Overnight, temperatures will fall to a mild 15C, but there is not expected to be any rainfall over Edinburgh. At around 7am, when the mercury will be hovering just above 15C, brief sunny spells are forecast.

However, moving into the afternoon, heavy rainfall is once again expected. The Met Office states that the showers will be "developing widely in the afternoon, heavy and possibly thundery".

By 4pm, the rain is expected to have cleared up. However, it will remain cloudy for the remainder of the day, other than a brief sunny spell at around 9pm, and temperatures will remain at around 15C.
