Edinburgh Tyre Extinguishers target 10 cars in shadow of '£15k private school'

Climate activist group The Tyre Extinguishers have disarmed a further ten SUVs in Edinburgh as part of their latest attack.

The eco group have been deflating the tyres of "gas-guzzling" SUVs across Edinburgh and the rest of the UK in recent months, making it "impossible" to own one in the city.

Recently, areas such as Portobello, Bruntsfield and Leith have all been targeted by the group, with various people calling out the potentially dangerous situations that may arise from having their vehicles put out of action.

On Tuesday evening, May 31, the group struck again in the area of Merchiston, deflating the tyres of a further ten SUVs around the area of "elite £15,000 a year private school," George Watsons College.

According to The Tyre Extinguishers, a total of around 200 SUVs have been disarmed in recent months across the capital, with flyers left on the windscreen, informing drivers of the harm their vehicle causes to the environment.

The group also say that a 'rivalry' between Edinburgh and Glasgow has kicked off as both cities "step up" their campaign to make impossible to own a "gas-guzzling SUV."

They added: "A new group, 'The Deflationists', announced they had deflated 50 SUVs last night in some of Glasgow's wealthiest areas, the Newslands and Shawlands areas.

"Simultaneously, the Tyre Extinguishers disarmed a further 10 SUVs in the Merchiston area of Edinburgh, in the shadow of George Watson's College, one of Edinburgh's many elite private schools, where parents pay nearly £15,000 a year for their children's education.

"The disarming of these SUVs comes in the wake of a few weeks of massive global escalation for the Tyre Extinguishers, with around 4,000 SUVs now disarmed, as well as Tyre Extinguisher groups springing up in Sweden, New Zealand, Switzerland, Germany, The Netherlands, and more planned.

"It also comes as scientists declare that the recent deadly heatwave in South Asia was caused by climate change, underlining the need for immediate action."
