Edinburgh tram gets stuck behind parked van for over 20 minutes on new line

An Edinburgh pedestrian has captured the moment a Leith-bound tram became trapped behind a parked white van in the shore area of the capital.

The incident took place shortly after 2pm on Tuesday June 20 on the new extended line to Newhaven that opened to the public on June 7.

This is not the first time a tram has been blocked by a rogue parked vehicle, as on June 2, Edinburgh Live reported that a tram had to be guided past a parked van during a trial run of the much anticipated new route.

Robert Drysdale, a local resident who spotted the incident, said the tram was stuck for "over 20 minutes'." According to Robert, the tram only "just" managed to squeeze past the abandoned motor.

The vehicle had been making its way up Constitution Street in Leith, but was blocked by a parked van which was "over the line'" - a driver of another tram was called to help guide his colleague past safely.

At the time Edinburgh Trams stated that they felt the incident was an isolated incident and that they did not anticipate this issue to cause problems moving forward.

A spokesperson said on June 2: "Since we started running trams between Picardy Place and Newhaven as part of testing and commissioning, this is the first incident of its kind. Hence, it has also occasionally happened on the current network and has been dealt with successfully by our Service Delivery team.

"Therefore, we are confident that incidents like this will not represent an issue in the future once we launch services to Newhaven."

Edinburgh Trams have been contacted for comment.
