Edinburgh to host 'Great Willy Waddle' to raise funds for male cancer charity

A male cancer charity has come up with a novel way of helping to raise funds and awareness by asking Scots to dress up in inflatable penis suits and join them for a unique fun run in the capital in June.

Orchid, a charity which helps people facing battles with penile, testicular and prostate cancers, has successfully run the Great Willy Waddle event in London's Queen Elizabeth Park for a number of years, and this is the first time they will be bringing it to Scotland.

"As well as being a fun quirky fundraiser, the Waddle also raises awareness of male cancer," explained public fundraising lead for Orchid, Dani Freedland. "Particularly looking at penile cancer, which has a high incident rate in Scotland compared to elsewhere in the UK.

"While this undoubtedly is a highly memorable event, it's an important opportunity to raise awareness of the signs, symptoms and risk factors of male cancer, which affects 55,000 men who are diagnosed each year, while also raising vital funds."

She explained that the charity already has a presence in Scotland and wanted to bring the fundraiser north for the first time, with Holyrood Park in the capital picked out as the ideal location.

Dani added: "We love Edinburgh and hope we can get plenty of sign-ups for such an important cause, it's a fun and unique event that really lends itself to groups of people be that companies, friends or families."

To sign up, Scots (over 16) can visit the Orchid website where they can order their inflatable penis costume (suit provided for you to keep) and then waddle, jog or walk the 2k route through Holyrood Park.

Costing £25 to register, the charity is asking people to raise £100 (or more) to support the charity helping those affected by male cancer. People will also be able to donate on the day if they can't take part, so they can come and watch if they aren't running.

Dani added: "We are a very small charity so anyone who takes part's support will have a huge impact on the work we are able to do."

The Great Willy Waddle:

Date: 17th June 2023, 2 pm
