Edinburgh students set to gather for vigil for trans teen 'stabbed to death in park'

Students at the University of Edinburgh have organised a vigil in memory of murdered transgender teen, Brianna Ghey.

Brianna, 16, was found dead in a park in Warrington, Cheshire, over the weekend. Police confirmed she had been stabbed.

Officers investigating the incident have since arrested a 15-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl, on suspicion of murder. The Liverpool Echo reports that the two suspects currently remain in custody and are said to be assisting detectives with their inquiries.

News of Brianna's death caused outrage from within the LGBT+ community, with many gatherings now organised up and down the country.

On February 17 at 12pm, a vigil will be Edinburgh at Bristo Square for anyone wishing to pay respects.

Caitlin Wickham, one of the organisers, posted on Twitter: "Join us this Friday for a vigil in remembrance of #BriannaGhey.

"We'll be in Bristo Square at the University of Edinburgh at 12pm. We are coming together to remember Brianna whose life was cut too short. Remember her name."

Speaking on the investigation, Detective Chief Superintendent Mike Evans said: “A number of enquiries in relation to this incident are underway and we are doing all that we can to establish the exact circumstances of what has happened. At this time, there is no evidence to suggest that the circumstances surrounding Brianna’s death are hate related.

"Patrols have been stepped up in the local area and officers will remain in the Culcheth area to provide reassurance and address any concerns that residents may have. I would ask anyone who has any information, no matter how big or small, that they believe could help with our investigation to get in touch."
