Edinburgh student tells of life on hit TV show Traitors after it took UK by storm

An Edinburgh student has revealed what it was like to be a contestant on a new hit TV show that has taken the UK by storm.

Alyssa Chan, 22, a business studies student at Queen Margaret University, was on the new BBC show Traitors. In the series, 22 ordinary people battled it out for £120,000.

The popular production was only broadcast last month which was presented by Claudio Winkelman and was filmed at Ardross Castle, North of Inverness, last summer.

Alyssa, who is from Cork in Ireland and is currently in her fourth year, took some time to speak to Edinburgh Live about her experience. She said: “It was weird because it was the first season of the show in the UK there was not a lot to go off, we could watch the success or failure of the other traitors, but it is hard to know.”

“We were all taking it as it comes and managing our expectations and then it just grew and grew. I think more people are still watching it now. It is bizarre people are recognising me and I’ve never had that before.

“I’m just so happy to be part of something so successful and it’s such a flex to be on the first season as well. I am happy I did it because it is something I had never done before.”

Alyssa was picked by Claudia Winkelman to be one of the three ‘traitors’ from the get-go. Her role was to cause chaos and accuse innocent players, the ‘faithfuls’ of dirty play and reach the final unnoticed.

However, in round 6 she was voted off as fellow contestant Will convinced other participants to vote her off the show, Alyssa said: “I was shocked and then I was a bit disappointed, but it was more of a relief just to not have to be sly anymore and I could just go back to being me and not just have to play the tough game anymore.”

Alyssa went onto say she has forgiven Will: “Yes, I have, it took a few days I think, I was a bit hurt by it and I was completely blindsided and as the days went on I was able to look at it as a game and just commend him for the gameplay.”

“He really could have won with it, he’s a really great person and we still chat now.”

Alyssa has no initial plans to take part in other TV shows and is now concentrating on finishing her degree and moving to London but has not ruled out a return to competitive TV.
