Edinburgh student sparked international panic after turning off phone to study

A Edinburgh University student sparked an international search after switching off her phone for 19 days to study.

Ruoxin Huang, 26, a postgraduate student in anthropology at the University of Edinburgh, had failed to make contact with her concerned family for several days sparking a social media appeal.

Dad Min Huang said the family had last spoken to the Chinese student on March 1, while friends hadn't heard from her since March 8.

They believed she was most likely in Bradford, Yorkshire, before starting her PhD in Scotland.

The family said they normally spoke every Saturday and had become so anxious they had no choice but to contact the Chinese Consulate for help.

The missing case made headlines in China with the Beijing Evening News announcing an "urgent" search was taking place for the student.

The University of Edinburgh aided police efforts to find Ruoxin and discovered her PhD tutor Stefan Ecks had received a message from her on Twitter on March 15.

He said: “I received Huang Ruoxin’s latest message on March 15 and wrote back to her today. She may not have realised everyone’s concerns about her.”

Friends made contact with the student, who had no idea she was a missing person, as she had switched her phone off to write a doctoral research project.

A University spokesperson said: “We have been liaising with the police to support their enquiries and are pleased to hear that the student has been found safe and well.”

Deputy Consul General Hou Danna at the Chinese Consulate-General in Edinburgh said: "The Chinese Consulate-General always prioritize the safety and wellbeing of Chinese students who live and study in Scotland.

"The Consulate-General took immediate actions as soon as received the report on 20 March.

"We coordinated the search effort with the University of Edinburgh and other partners. Police Scotland has also been alerted to the incident.

"Thanks to the joint efforts from all sides, we were able to confirm that the missing Chinese student found safe and well on the same day.

“With Chinese students’ health, safety and wellbeing our first and foremost concern, we will continue to do whatever possible to support their stay in Scotland. ”
