Edinburgh street closures announced as George Street transformation begins

Work is set to get underway on the transformation of George Street, with certain blocks being inaccessible to traffic over the coming weeks.

The First New Town project will see George Street pedestrianised and only accessible to vehicles such as taxis, delivery and service vehicles, and Blue Badge holders during certain periods. Buses will also be removed from the thoroughfare.

Edinburgh Council says that from March to June last year they engaged with community groups and residents to better understand the needs of those in the area. They say the transformation will improve 'accessibility, active travel and traffic access'.

In a tweet, Edinburgh Council said: "Survey work starts at George Street on 5 June to 8 June. We’ll close one block each night to vehicles, 8pm to 6am, starting at the west end of the street. Pavements will be still be open."

On the First New Town project website, they describe the regeneration of the area: "We’re creating a welcoming, safe, better connected and sustainable space that will embrace and enhance the much-loved heritage of George Street, Castle Street, Frederick Street and Hanover Street.

"Our vision is to provide a great place that everyone can enjoy and benefit from, which supports our drive to be net zero carbon by 2030 and helps the city’s economic recovery. People are at the heart of this key part of Edinburgh’s City Centre Transformation, whether a resident or there to work, visit, shop, cycle to and through, socialise or simply pause for a while."
