Edinburgh snow and ice weather warning extended as wintry weather to cause havoc

A weather warning for Edinburgh has been extended as snow and ice is expected across the capital.

The Met Office has updated the weather alert this morning (March 6), with the wintry weather expected to continue into Wednesday morning. Forecasters have confirmed that frequent snow showers are set to continue this week, causing disruption in Edinburgh and surrounding areas.

The warning began at 12am on Monday and will now remain in place until 10am on Wednesday, March 8 as a northerly airflow is set to bring some disruptive weather over the next few days.

When is the weather warning in place?

The yellow weather warning has been extended to Wednesday morning, meaning it will be in place from today (March 6), until March 8 at 10am.

Originally, the alert was set for midnight on march 6 until midnight on Tuesday, March 7 - but it was extended due to the threat of snow and ice becoming more widespread.

Local areas impacted by Met Office yellow weather warning

  • Edinburgh
  • East Lothian
  • Midlothian

What to expect from Edinburgh snow and ice yellow weather warning

The Met Office have told the people of Edinburgh to be aware to expect the following issues:

  • There is a small chance of travel delays on roads with some stranded vehicles and passengers, along with delayed or cancelled rail and air travel
  • There is a slight chance that some rural communities could become cut off
  • A small chance of injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces
  • There is a small chance that power cuts will occur and other services, such as mobile phone coverage, may be affected

The Met Office forecast has noted that strong winds will drive frequent showers of snow, sleet and hail into Edinburgh on Tuesday.

Between 5-10 centimetres of snow are possible in higher grounds of northern Scotland - but Edinburgh should see between two and five cm of snow by the end of the weather warning.

Due to the sub-zero temperatures of -2°C throughout the week, icy patches are likely on roads and pavements, which could cause issues, particularly at night when they aren't as visible.

Dr Agostinho Sousa, Head of Extreme Events and Health Protection at the UK Health Security Agency, said: “During periods like this, it is important to check in on family, friends and relatives who may be more vulnerable to the cold weather, as it can have a serious impact on health.

“If you have a pre-existing medical condition or are over the age of 65, it is important to try and heat your home to at least 18°C if you can.’’
