Edinburgh Six by Nico launch 'throwback menu' with unusual ancient Rome dishes

An Edinburgh New Town's high-class restaurant, famous for serving a themed six-course sampling menu that changes every six weeks, has launched a new menu.

Now, Nico Simeone, the chef of the place, is ready to present this month's new six-course menu inspired by age-old recipes of ancient Romans, who proved to be surprisingly inventive with their dishes. He said: "Our teams have trawled through Roman recipe books to find a way to recreate dishes for the modern foodie.

"Let's not forget that the Romans were resourceful and inventive with their produce, with many of their dishes revealing the origins of Italian cuisine.

"Ancient Roman cuisine featured a diverse array of unusual dishes, strange food items, and unconventional cooking experiments, and we hope that our interpretation will allow our guests to enjoy the flavours and tastes of ancient Roman cuisine today."

The new 'Ancient Rome' menu will run from Tuesday, March 15 to Sunday, April 24, and feature some unforgettable combinations. The second course includes, for example, White Asparagus, Crispy Duck Egg, Hazelnut and Brown Butter. While the fifth course is sure to blow one's mind away with Belly of Pork Fillet, Turned Rib, Cured Meat, Fennel and Toasted Fennel Seed, Date and Apple Compote, Braised Fennel.

And, of course, dessert, which was considered an unmissable part of dining in ancient Rome, will have you try Honey Parfait, Ricotta Cheese Mousse, Preserved Quince, Fizzy Muscat Grape, Pear and Citrus, Honey Tuile. That might sound excessively fulfilling for a desert alone, but it's not for nothing that the Romans were referring to the sweet treat at the end of the feast as 'mensa secunda' or 'second meal'.

This top-class dining experience is undoubtedly not the one to leave its guests half-hungry and is priced at a reasonably affordable £32 per person with the option to top it up expertly selected drinks pairing for an additional £27. And a vegetarian option is available for every course on the menu.

Since it is still just over a week until the 'Ancient Rome' menu is served at Six by Nico venues, you have a chance to book for a current Disney-themed menu that will remind you of some of the company's most-loved productions.
