Edinburgh shoppers face ScotRail chaos this Christmas as 2,000 workers strike

Rail strikes that will take place on every Friday and Saturday in December will hamper shoppers' ability to buy this year’s Christmas presents in the capital.

Thousands of staff members, such as conductors, ticket examiners as well as station staff will walk out on Friday and Saturday’s from December 2 until Christmas Eve.

The move will bring the railways to a screeching halt during one of the most hectic shopping periods of the year.

The RMT Union stated that over 2,000 workers will be taking part in the industrial action after they rejected the latest pay offer from the Scottish Government controlled ScotRail, the Daily Record reports.

Edinburgh is traditionally seen as a hotspot for consumers looking to snag a bargain for loved ones this Christmas but those planning on making the trip at the weekends in December will have to make alternative arrangements.

ScotRail workers will also strike on Saturday, November 19 under the plans, scuppering travel for thousands of rugby fans travelling to watch Scotland face Argentina at Murrayfield.

The RMT union warned last week it would continue industrial action for "as long as it takes" to get a fair pay deal. Its members recently rejected an improved offer put to members that was understood to be around 7.5 per cent - comprising a £500 uplift on top of the five per cent already offered.

Mick Hogg, RMT Scotland organiser, previously said: "It's not enough. We are actually fighting to defend the living standards and working conditions.

"We want more because the retail price index is 12.6 per cent so the offer that is on the table comes nowhere near acceptable to RMT members."
